How do you know if a particular lawyer
is the right lawyer for you, your case?

Not all lawyers are equal. Some have more experience
than others. Some have more experience 'specific' to your
circumstances than others. There are lawyers who routinely
seek to settle cases out of court and there are those who take their
arguments before a judge and jury more often. If you should select
a lawyer who isn't the right lawyer for your case the results could
range from disappointing to tragic, so don't be afraid to ask
questions. Don't feel you need to make an on-the-spot decision.
Discuss your perceptions of lawyers with someone close to you.
Then make your decision on sound judgment and the facts. Here
are some questions you should consider asking any attorney that
you're considering:
  • How long have you been practicing law?

  • How long have you been practicing law in Louisiana?

  • In this community?

  • How many cases have you completed?

  • How many cases like mine have you completed?

  • How many cases have you settled compared to cases
brought before a judge and jury?

  • How many cases have you tried before a judge only?

  • What is your winning percentage before a judge?
  • How may cases have you tried before a jury?

  • What is your winning percentage before a jury?

  • How many million-plus dollar cases have you won?

  • What is the total amount of judgment awards and
    settlements you've won for clients?

  • What is your rating on the world-wide Martin-Hubbell
    attorney rating system?

  • If your firm takes my case, will it be assigned to another attorney?

(If the answer to this last question is 'yes' then start from the top and ask the same questions about the attorney that will be assigned to your case).
